Deerfield Island Park

Deerfield Island is a 53.3-acre nature-oriented park that offers outdoor recreational opportunities and environmental education. Accessible only by boat, this roughly triangular-shaped park is bordered by the Intracoastal Waterway and the Hillsboro and Royal Palm canals.

The eastern portion of the area once included slash pines, while most of the western part was a treeless freshwater marsh. Today, remnants of the wetland are evident, although red and white mangroves are the dominant species. Many of the site’s native plants and animals have succumbed to invasive, non-native species over the years, but native plants that provide food for native animals are now being reintroduced.

History

Deerfield Beach’s history dates back to 1890 when a small settlement named Hillsborough was developed along the Hillsboro River. As the population grew to 20 by 1898, the settlement was now served by its own post office and the town was named Deerfield for the deer that grazed along the Hillsboro River.

By the early twentieth century, as the town’s population continued to grow, the Florida East Coast Railroad constructed tracks en route to Miami bisecting Deerfield. Deerfield’s early settlers were mostly farmers who grew pineapples, tomatoes, green beans, squash and fished along the Intracoastal Waterway. Through the 1940s, Deerfield remained a largely agricultural based community, but in 1939 the town’s name was changed to Deerfield Beach to let tourists know it has a beach.
